Review of the Welsh Crown Green Bowling Season 2010.

    Compiled by Mal Parry.

1/ Although The Welsh Senior Men's Team did not progress through the group stage of the Endsleigh Senior County Championship they had a tremendous result in winning the Endsleigh Senior Supplementary County Championship. More details are to be found below.

2/ Llay Miners Welfare Bowling Club have probably written themselves into the record books with the success that has come its way this season: Wrexham Premier Division champions, Cyril Adams County Cup winners, Welsh Club champions, W.G. Roberts Cup winners, Flintshire Division 1 Champions, Pairs' League Division 1 Champions. Llay also represented Wales in the British Club Championship which was cancelled shortly after the start due to the torrential rain.

3/ Esclusham Bowling Club, are the Blackwell Hydraulics Welsh Counties 2010 champions. This is twelve seasons running that Wrexham teams have been champions in this league and continues the dominance of Wrexham teams in a number of competitions in North Wales in recent years.

4/ Ben Riley aged '13', a Welsh Junior, wins the Burton Cup, beating Ian Dutton, a Welsh Senior, 21-14 in final.

5/ The Welsh Junior team after beating North Lancs & Fylde, and then Staffordshire eventually lost to Yorkshire in the Drakes Pride Junior Championship Final. Twelve winners each but the aggregate lost by 47.

6/ Nick Jones of Chirk AAA won the Junior Welsh Merit, beating Keiron Roberts New Broughton 21-11 in the final. Both players played in the final of the BCGBA Junior Merit Final with Nick losing in the first round and Keiron in the quarter final.

7/ Tom Roberts (Gresford Colliery) won the Welsh Veterans Merit, beating Bob Dolby 21-19 (Hawkesbury) in the final.

8/ The Welsh contingency did themselves proud in the All England Championship at Fleetwood with Anthony Bailey (Llanrwst) winning his first game 21 - 12, but then losing to previous winner Ian Ross 19-21 in the second round. Carl Bonatti (Llay) also won 21 - 12 in the first round, but then lost in the second round. Colin Jones (Cunliffe) lost to Merseysides' merit winner Anthony Thompson. Darren Williams (Deganwy) lost to 17 against Mark Britton, and Jason Jones (Sunny Rhyl) gave a good account of himself in just loosing to Shropshire's merit winner Martin Lloyd .

9/ John Mathews, representing Wales in the Jack & Jean Isherwood Veteran Finals, lost to the eventual winner in the semi-final.

10/ Linda Williams won the Ladies' Senior Merit by beating Jane Bowler 21-19 in the final. Linda then went on to win the Ladies' Champion of Champions at the Waterloo, Blackpool.

11/ Llay of Wrexham, Coed Talon of Flintshire, Denbigh of Glyndwr and Blaenau Ffestiniog from Gwynedd, by winning their respective area County Cups played for The Welsh Championship at Aston on the 12th September, with Llay winning.

12/ Lewis Scott (St.Asaph) finished as the League Table winner after the last round of the WPA played at Conway.

12a/ For the third year running, a Deganwy player won the WPA Final Day Competition, when Peter Jones beat Anthony Bailey (Llanrwst) in the final at Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.

14/John Bailey had a clean sweep at the Colwyn Bay Bowls festival in winning the Bill Hughes, George Davies, and then with his partner Maureen Morgan the mixed doubles competition. He also added the Alan Jones Memorial Trophy for good measure, to make him still arguably Wales' number one player.

Welsh Mens Senior Merit Video 2010

        • Below is the draw for the Welsh Merit Final of which is to be played at Pentre Broughton in Wrexham on the 27th June, also an insight into the first round games as seen by Nick (Freak) Hughes

          Venue: PENTRE BROUGHTON Wrexham

What a days play is in store for all us lucky supporters, with top bowlers on show at a very good green to show off their bowling skills.

The green has large reaching corners and some very nice little marks concealed in there.

The winner of this feild on this green will be a very deserved Welsh Champ 2010.

The Draw has put some absolute cracking matches together in the first round.

          Kevin Nicholas v John Evans
2 time Welsh Champion takes on the in form Postie, this should be a cracker. The form books are suggesting the Postie can deliver the goods this season but you can never right off "The Nic".

          Peter Grimston v Carl Bonatti
The Shropshire Hawk playing in his first welsh merit takes on runner up from 2007 CB lad, this green will suite Carlo who loves the corners so hard to pick a winner from these two.

          Scott Todd v Darren Williams
Two clubs mates thrown together here but the bookies have got to favour current WPA champ Dazzler with all his experience. That said Toddy has got some skills in the bag and more than capable of have a good run in this welsh championship.

          Mark Whiteley v Ivor Jones
Yet again two clubs mates thrown together and another welsh champion looking to make another title. It is always tough to play your team mate in such comps and especially one of Mark's calibre, very tight over the crown so Mr Jones v Mr Whiteley look s a good un.

          Lewis Scott v John Jones
New bread v old guard, Lewis one of the form players again this year and always full of confidence. John thou has bags of experience and you dont win the IOM without having the skills to pay the bills.

          Gerwyn Davies v Colin Jones
A tie that throws to Wxm lads together, Beasty a big comp player and winner against Colin Jnr who came through what must have been the hardest green to qualify in Wales.

          Anthony Bailey v Carl Pemberton
This the tie of the round for me, Pemberton a massive comp player as is Bailey boy... always give their all and there is nothing to pick between either of them.

          Dave Mathias v Jason Jones
The last game again throws new bread v old guard, Dave a runner up some years back and Jason who has an impeccable record at county level. The green may play its part in this one.

          1. Kevin Nicholas v John Evans

          2. Peter Grimston v Carl Bonatti

          3. Scott Todd v Darren Williams

          4. Mark Whiteley v Ivor Jones

          5. Lewis Scott v John Jones

          6. Gerwyn Davies v Colin Jones

          7. Anthony Bailey v Carl Pemberton

          8. Dave Mathias v Jason Jones

Latest News from the WCGBA Junior League

Decisions from the Junior League meeting Friday 23rd. April

                        a. The launch date has been put back 2 weeks and the new Junior League will start on the weekend Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd May 2010

                        b. 5 teams have been entered from the Flintshire/Wrexham areas

                        c. Only 3 teams have so far been entered from the Glyndwr/Gwynedd areas.

                        d. The delay in starting is to allow us time to persuade and help other teams to enter especially in the Glyndwr/Gwynedd where ideally we would want a fourth team.

                        e. David Walker is currently working on the fixture lists and these will be published soon.

                        f. League Rules as compiled by DT Evans and Dave Walker of the WCGBA Competitions Committee will be issued to all registered teams shortly.

                        g. Basis format of matches : each match will consist of 4 singles and 2 doubles.

                        h. The overriding objective is to seek to get every registered Junior players bowling competitively whatever the age and experience.

                        i. To help in this respect all teams agreed to adopt a stance that aims to avoid a 'win at all costs attitude' and to approach the matches in the right spirit with captains agreeing to ensure that the order of play did not lead to mis-matches and potential harm and damage to any inexperienced players.

If you need further information you can get quite a lot from the 2 WCGBA Newsletters issued already in March and April 2010 and which will be with your Club Secretary or on your Noticeboard. There is a lis of contacts there to help too.

Please get involved. We regard this as one of the most important initiatives of recent years!!
