WELSH CROWN GREEN BOWLING ASSOCIATION

2013 SEASON

CONWY ARE THE NEW WELSH CLUB CHAMPIONS AFTER BEATING ESCLUSHAM IN THE FINAL.

Review of the Welsh Crown Green Bowling Season 2013.
Compiled by Mal Parry.
As usual a brief summary of the season..
1/ When compiling this summary I usually try and look for a an outstanding team performance or an individual performance to put at the top, this year I have gone for 2 junior players in Dylan Williams (llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch) or Llanfair.P.G. for not only winning the Welsh Junior Merit but also getting to the Junior All England final where he lost 21-18 in the final, and Courtney Metcalfe (Ellesmere B.C.) who won the BCG Ladies 2013 Junior Merit. (the rest are in no particular running order)

2/John Bonatti (Coed Talon) at last won the Welsh Senior Merit at Meliden beating Darren Williams (Conwy) in the final, Darren is another player who has been striving and got very close to winning many times before.

3/Kevin Nicholas (Gresford Colliery) won the Veterans Welsh merit at the first time of asking, beating Alan Davies (Craig-y-Don) in the final.

4/Gay Cooper won the Ladies Welsh Merit, and also got to the quarter final of the Ladies Champion of Champions, and Jane Bowler had a superb day at the Ladies British Merit where she lost in the final, also getting to the Ladies Talbot final and just getting edged out 20-21.

5/The Welsh Senior Men's Team had a promising start to their group games, but in the end did not progress, although they blooded some new players in the Supplementary Competition and came away with some promising results which bodes well for the future.

6/The Junior team again had some promising results early on in their group, but again did not progress.

7/The Ladies team was almost a carbon copy of the other Welsh Teams 2013, in that they again started well but did not go through to the knock out stage.

8/Again it seems like it is deja vu when it comes to John Bailey, who for a few years now has arguably been regarded as Wales No 1 Player, again doing well in a lot of the major competitions and again qualifying for The Prestigious Champion of Champions at Blackpool, although having said that Dave (rocky) Jones in some quarters could well be right up there alongside John having won the Welsh Counties League Merit yet again, which means he has now won it three out of the last four years.

9/Conwy won the Welsh Club Championship beating Esclusham by 41 points in the final, they will now represent Wales in The British Championships at Irlam in early 2014, (along with Esclusham) they also won the Gwynedd County cup and the Section A of the North Wales coastal bowling league for the first time in the clubs history.

10/Esclusham B.C. won the Prestigious Welsh Counties League having played 22 games and won 22 a superb achievement that has never been done before,, They also won The Wrexham Premier Division, The Cyril Adams County Cup, The W.G. Roberts Cup, The Division One Pairs League, The Premier Division Cup, and lost in the final of The Welsh Club Championship.

11/The other major happening for the association in 2013 is that Matt Foster has been appointed as the new CEO (Chief Exec) of the W.C.G.B.A.

12/Another achievement of the season was the appointment of D.T.Evans as the referee to officiate the home match with regards to the B.C.GB.A. Crosfield Cup Final between W&W and Derbyshire.

The 88th Welsh Merit was won by John Bonatti, who beat Darren Williams 21 - 14 in the final with what was some devastating long length bowling.
Some of the more fancied players lost in the first round, amongst them were last years winner Chris Slater, the millennium winner Dave (rocky) Jones and the 2011 All England winner Mike Riley.
Thanks should also go to Dave Walker, Terry Williams, D.T.Evans, and Dusia Price and the other referees and measurers who worked tirelessly through out the day.
Thanks also to Meliden B.C. who hosted the event and had the green in excellent condition which proved challenging to the players, another mention should go to the ladies in the kitchen who put on some excellent refreshments.
